Preserving and promoting Japanese culture by new “Wakon-yosai”
After the World War II, Japan has developed into an industrialized nation by adopting western technology and kneading them with its traditional wisdom depicted by the typical Japanese character “Kinben”, which literally means “diligence”. In a word, we have practiced “Wakon-yosai”.
During the course of development, the Japanese government tended to accord priority to its tertiary industries especially in forming its trading policies. Now we are paying for it as it has caused the primary industries to wane.
As the primary industries had been harmonized with the Japanese four seasons and nature which are indispensable element of the Japanese culture, we dread that the decline of the primary industries might erode the Japanese traditional cultures, skills, values and, eventually, the nation itself. It seems that the Japanese spirit is gradually fading away under the current circumstances.
However, there’s no use crying over spilt milk. Under these situations, we aim to rebuild the concept of “Wakon-yosai” and contribute to preserving and promoting Japanese traditional cultures, skills and values by inventing new products that not only embedded with Japanese spirit but also acceptable to the modern society.
NOTE: “Wakon-yosai” is an idiom made of four kanji. Each kanji literally means “Japanese”, “Spirit”, “Western” and “Science“. This idiom represents “Learn western science based on Japanese original spirit”. “Spirit” can be interpreted as values, perspective or attitude.
